Today, well... yesterday... was the start of the Semana Santa extravaganza- the week leading up to Easter. This day, however is a unique Guanajuato tradition, a celebration of the Virgin of Dolores- who has something to do with the mines, and whose festivities have grown into an all out spring/Easter celebration for the city. The fun starts Thursday, when all the vendors come out with their goods (see pics), and continues through the night and all morning on Friday. The whole town turns out for the event- literally, the streets were more crowded at 4am this morning than on any regular afternoon. The guys pass out flowers to the girls, and everyone gets eggs full of confetti smashed on their heads. And the city gives out free food and ice cream!
I'm completely exhausted (the pic above was from our 7am breakfast, about five minutes before I went home to go to bed), but what a great little tradition! And talk about eye candy- it was a color-palooza!
